Meat-Eaters (Idaho Press)

The average American eats about a pound of meat every two days

From the 1870s to the 1940s when their population was at its peak, American hobos were usually men who traveled and looked for work. Tramps, on the other hand, traveled but didn’t look for work, and bums survived by begging or stealing. Proper bums didn’t travel.

In 1896, 1900 and 1908, U.S. voters had a choice of voting for William or William. In 1896 and 1900, William Jennings Bryan lost to William McKinley. In 1908, Bryan tried again for president by going up against William Howard Taft. Taft won, making Bryan the only Democratic candidate in history to lose three tries for the presidency.

Star Trek fans have created a Klingon lexicon, and some hold that all of Shakespeare’s plays were originally written in Klingon. A deadly Klingon insult, “Hab SolI Quch!” is translated, “Your mother has a smooth forehead!”

Recent polls have found that the average American most fears speaking before a group (41 percent), followed by heights (32 percent), insects and bugs (22 percent), financial problems (22 percent) and deep water (22 percent).

Vietnam is named for a Chinese term that means “beyond the southern border.”
